The hemp plant is a marvel. Cultivated for more than 10,000 years, it can be used in a myriad of different ways. Hemp fiber can be used to make fabric, rope, clothing, paper, and much more. Hemp seeds can be ground into flour, made into non-dairy milk, eaten as a snack, and even made into beer. Hemp oil can be used in cooking, as a salad dressing, even as a biofuel like most vegetable oils.

But isn't hemp illegal?

The hemp plant, known in Latin as Cannibis sativa, is the same species as the marijuana plant. However, hemp is genetically distinct and is non-psychoactive, containing less than 0.3% THC – the active compound in marijuana. In most countries, hemp is legal to grow and consume. It's a bit different in the US, where hemp products can be used but the plant itself must be imported. It's also important to distinguish between hemp seed oil, which contains almost no detectable THC, and hemp oil, which comes from the leaves and stems and may contain small amounts of THC.

Benefits of hemp seed oil

Recently, hemp seed oil has become more popular both as a dietary supplement and a topical application for healthy skin. That is because hemp seed oil contains very high levels of linoleic and alpha-linoleic essential fatty acids. These compounds lubricate and moisturize the skin, and are especially useful in treating the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, and rashes. Taken internally, hemp seed oil lowers blood cholesterol levels, reducing arterial plaque and lowering blood pressure. Pure hemp seed oil – meaning without any added preservatives or additives – is especially good for sensitive skin.

Sana Oil Extractor-2

Press your own oil

You can purchase commercially-produced refined hempseed oil, but with the Sana Oil Extractor you can make fresh hempseed oil in just the amounts you need. Hemp seeds are easy to press and give a good oil yield. Best of all, when you press your own you can be sure it is fresh and contains no additives or impurities.

How to prepare

Ingredients

  • Hemp seeds (not hulled)
  • Beeswax

Slowly add hemp seeds into the hopper of the Sana Oil Extractor until you have the amount of fresh cold-pressed oil you need. Over gentle heat, melt beeswax into the hemp seed oil in a 1:4 ratio. You can reduce the beeswax to a 1:6 ratio if you prefer a soft ointment, but we’ve found a 1:4 ratio gives a firm, long-lasting salve. Before it cools, pour the mixture into containers and allow to cool. Don’t forget to label them with the name and date.

To use, just apply the salve to affected areas of dry skin and gently rub it in. Unlike most oils, hemp seed oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it is quickly absorbed into the skin.

The salve should retain its effectiveness for between 6-12 months. Keeping it stored in a cool dry place will extend its life. We recommend making a small amount at a time and making a fresh batch whenever you run out.
